About

Who makes DisplayBridge

Hi, I'm Yannick, a software developer living in Zurich, Switzerland 🇨🇭. I have a master's degree in computer science from ETH Zurich and build DisplayBridge as a side project.

My background

I have been writing software for more than ten years. These are the steps that led to DisplayBridge:

  1. 2015Android apps from the age of 15 I taught myself programming in Java and published several Android apps, mostly small games, on the Google Play Store.
  2. 2018My own web development business at 18 I built more than 30 websites for small businesses, from a law office to a restaurant and a gym.
  3. 2019–2026Computer science at ETH Zurich Bachelor's and master's degree in computer science. I finished my master's in February 2026, with a major in machine intelligence (artificial intelligence).
  4. 2025–2026Master's thesis at IBM Research Europe Custom code for graphics processors (GPUs) that makes large AI language models faster and makes training them at large scale possible.
  5. 2026The DisplayBridge app Public since October 2026: the app that turns your old 5K iMac into a monitor 😉

Why I built DisplayBridge

It started because I wanted a 5K screen. I bought an old 2015 iMac with a 5K display and converted it into a plain monitor with a hardware controller board. That worked, but there was still an iMac Pro with the same kind of 5K screen on my desk, and converting that one as well would have been too expensive.

Apple's Target Display Mode, which once let an iMac work as a monitor for another Mac, was never available on the 5K iMacs. So I wondered whether software could do the job instead: the full 5K picture at 60 frames per second, sharp enough for small text, over one cable. I started writing DisplayBridge, and it worked much better than I had expected.

People have been looking for exactly this for about ten years, ever since the first 5K iMac came out without Target Display Mode. That is why I decided to share the app. It has been public since October 2026. I use it every day myself, and I keep releasing new versions based on feedback from more than 200 users so far.
